iOS Accounts for 65% of Apple’s Current Sales

quarterly sales since the fourth quarter of 2005, three quarters before the iPhone was first released. The most staggering factor might either be the very obvious upward moving trend without very much of a dip since the chart began, or it might be the face that even though the iPhone (which was released in 2007) was the only iOS device out three and a half years ago, this past quarter iOS accounted for 65% of Apple’s sales. That’s monstrous

Some of the figures in this chart more specifically ring right around $15 billion for the iPhone and iPad last quarter, with iPod Touch generating $2.3 billion on its own. On the other hand, OS X powered products like laptops and desktops generated only 20% of the revenue where 5 years ago that percentage was closer to half. The total percentage of Apple product sold by Apple this past quarter that WASNT powered by one of its operating systems was 10%. Is Apple no longer a software company? Is Apple almost solely a hardware company? When answering a question on Quora on whether Apple is a Software, Hardware or Media company, the creator of the chart above, Horace Dediu answered by saying it’s all three. This question was of course answered before he made the chart.

DAMN: In 2010, Facebook took in $1.86 billion in advertising revenue

Analysts are claiming that Facebook and Google may have more in common than previously believed, especially when it comes to how Facebook handles advertising. In new results from eMarketer, Facebook is raking in quite a bit of revenue based on advertising through the site. But, what’s most surprising to analysts, is not so much how much money that Facebook is drawing in, but the fact that it’s not coming from major advertising agencies, but more from small- and medium-sized businesses.

Facebook’s self-service ad platform is seeing a lot of business as of late. The popular social networking site has seen a worldwide advertising revenue increase of 86% versus the previous year’s results, courtesy of the $1.86 billion in revenue in took in. Of that, $1.21 billion was earned within the United States, adds the analyst.

The main takeaway of the results, though, is where the majority of the money is coming from. According to eMarketer, 60 percent –or $1.12 billion– stems from small- or medium-sized business that are more than likely using self-serve tools to advertise on the social website. That’s compared to the $740 million that’s being produced by major marketers, like Coke, Match.com, and P&G. According to Debra Williamson, the principal analyst at eMarketer, these small- and medium-sized businesses are taking advantage of Facebook’s rapid growth (which now has over 650 million users), and using the strategies they used to promote themselves on Google to do the same thing on Facebook.

Williamson adds that, “Facebook is the biggest storehouse of consumer data on the internet.” With that being said, it’s no surprise that marketers and advertisers, and anyone else that can prosper from the data that Facebook collects every day, is flocking to the social networking website.

Akuma, Taskmaster Join Marvel vs Capcom 3

OMG

Steve jobs takes medical leave

Today Apple announced that the company's iconic CEO, Steve Jobs, would be taking a leave of absence for an unspecified length of time due to health-related issues, his third since 2004.

The company did not specify why Jobs, who took left the company in 2009 in order to undergo treatments for pancreatic cancer, would be taking another leave or comment on the state of the CEO's condition, however, an internal memo sent from Jobs to Apple employees this morning suggests his absence may be lengthy.

The email, though sparse on details, informed Apple staff that COO Tim Cook would be taking responsibility for the company's day-to-day operations, and iterated Jobs' faith in the executive staff's ability to execute the "exciting plans we have in place for 2011."

As a result of today's announcement, Apple stock dropped 8-percent in oversea markets, while U.S. stock prices remained unaffected due to the Martin Luther King Day holiday.

Sony Going After PS3 Hackers

Sony Computer Entertainment America filed a complaint for injunctive relief and a motion for a temporary restraining order in a California court yesterday against hacker George Hotz, members of the hacker group fail0verflow, and a number of John Does for allegedly circumventing the PlayStation 3's protection measures.

In late December, members of fail0verflow discovered a way around Sony's PS3 security measures to access private root keys, allowing anyone to run unauthorized and pirated software on the console and later distributed the tools to other hackers. The group claims the security hole cannot be fixed with a simple firmware update and that Sony would instead have to issue completely new hardware.

Hotz, who last year claimed he already hacked the PS3, took it a step further days later by distributing tools helped created by fail0verflow to hack the console publicly on his website and even published a video of YouTube showcasing his homebrew application running on the PS3.

Sony is looking to restrain the hackers from further illegal activity, including manufacturing and distributing hacking tools, or they will "succeed in their attempts to ensure that pirated software can be run on the PS3 System, resulting in the destruction of SCEA's business."

The company claims the hackers violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and other copyright infringements, and is asking the defendants to turn over all computer hardware and software used in creating and transferring the hacking software.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011

I believe the saying goes: "Another year, another Smackdown." Truly, this 365 is no different as it gives us WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011, the latest in THQ's long line of pro wrestling video games. Last year, I thought the game breathed a newfound life into the genre, and this year I feel like Yuke's and THQ are just expanding on that formula. That's by no means bad -- I had a blast with WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 and really wish I was playing instead of writing right now -- but it's not groundbreaking like SVR '10.

This iteration of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw is delivering more than 70 Superstars, Divas and Legends, along with a plethora of match types and options. Most are things you should know from last time around -- Championship Scramble, Extreme Rules, and the ability to modify existing outfits in Superstar Threads -- but that doesn't mean WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 hasn't packed in a bunch of tweaks and additions.

Undead Nightmare Review

If, like me, you were waiting for more things to accomplish as John Marston, you shouldn't hesitate to pick up Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. Rockstar's latest downloadable content for Red Dead is very obviously a love letter to B-movie horror flicks with a touch of fantasy added for good measure. It's unapologetically campy, and that is what makes it so special. Whereas Red Dead Redemption was a serious story in a serious landscape during serious times, Undead Nightmare twists the formerly grave game into something much more lighthearted.

With all new cutscenes (the intro is truly epic), voice work from the original actors, creepier landscapes to explore complete with zombified animals, and a whole new soundtrack, it's clear that Rockstar put a lot of work into making this a complete, high-end production.

The nightmare begins when John and his family are having a peaceful evening together at their ranch at Beecher's Hope. It's a dark and stormy night, and all of a sudden regular folks are transforming into flesh-eating monsters. Relatives rise from the grave only to grab a bite out of their loved ones, and best friends quickly turn into bitter enemies due to fear. Luckily, John Marston is around and he's not going to stand for such a dire situation.

Now, before you head into the undead-infested wilds by your lonesome, keep in mind that general zombie survival rules apply:

1) Zombies are jerks that want to nom on your tasty brains, so don't trust them.
2) Always aim for the head.
3) If its head hasn't exploded, it's probably still coming to eat you.
4) Stay away from hordes.
5) Zombies can't climb ladders, so get up high for a better chance of survival.
